What makes up our balance?

Our balance is the result of various systems in our body working together to keep us centered and aligned:

  1. The musculoskeletal system, made up of our muscles, joints, and tissues, send signals to our brain about the location, action, and movements of our body at a given time.
  2. The visual system, made up of our eyes, picks up information about what’s happening in our environment and send signals to the brain
  3. The vestibular system, located in our inner ear and roughly the size of a quarter, contains fine hairs and specialized cells that send signals to our brain about motion, head position, and spatial orientation.
  4. The brain processes information from the rest of the body and sends signals back to help us stay balanced.

What is balance training?

Balance training involves specific exercises that strengthen muscles and improve coordination to help maintain balance. Starting in our 30s, we lose about 3-5% of muscle mass per decade. Balance training helps us counteract muscle loss and enhance mind-body awareness. Bold classes feature top balance training techniques, so members can effectively and safely improve balance.
